"Ok this little experiment is going to give you a feel as to how much of you emotions you need to put into your different fire techniques. Now then, keep in mind that emotions are much stronger than your personal energy so mind how much you put in your fire, but I want you to start putting them in. I will give you the freedom of deciding how much you want to use."

Sam tried it, but nothing happened. She tried putting a little more into it, but still nothing happened. "Why isn't it working?"

Sjips fiddled around with the two. After a while, he had connected the helmet and solar pad with the hlep of a little magic. He set his new creation on the windowsill so that it could soak up energy while he prepared dinner. He began to pluck the bird he'd caught, putting all the feathers in a sack for later use.

Petra smiled. "Ah, I see we are not a master at everything now are we? You must learn to use your emotions and then be able to transfer them to the fire. When you do this the flame will grow, just as it would if you put your energy into it, however a little more radically. Think about the thing that makes you happiest and transfer that emotion to your hand and then again to the fire."

Her face wiped clean of emotion at Pantera's words. Happiest? What made her happy? Ever. Everything for her was always work, or another mission. Sam never had paid much attention to what made her happy.

Sjips finished plucking the bird's feathers. He tied the sackful of feathers shut, and threw them at the bed. For now they would be a pillow. Carrying it over to the table, he got a knife from a box and began taking off the inedible parts of the bird, then gutting it.

(I'd forgotten how boring posting with yourself is...)

Pantera's memory snapped back into place. She had amnesia, duh. "Think of something that you like, whether it be cats, dogs, magic, anything really. But something that you really like a lot. That can be transferred into emotion. Try that."

Sam pictures someone's face and a smile formed across her lips. She focused again, and did as she was told. This time it worked.

Pantera saw the flame grow slightly. "Good. Now concentrate that emotion to your hand and transfer it to the fire."

"Yes it is. Now I want you to experiment with different amounts of emotion you put in there, keeping in mind it doesn't take much for the fire to grow out of control when using emotions."

Sam took a deep breath and focused on the fire again, concentrating. Strands of her dark brown hair fell into her face, but she ignored it. Pulling out some emotion, she watched the fire almost go out. Putting in more, she watched as it grew, but she stayed cautious as to how much she allowed to seep out into the fire, not wanting it to get out of hand, literally.

Pantera smiled again. "Very good. I usually use emotions myself so as not to wear myself out. Plus it is more efficient. Now, we can expand on what we can do with the fire since you can use you emotions. Now I want you to create a box of fire, the edges being about 15 meters away from us in every direction."

Sam let the fire go out and questioned, "When are we done?"

Pantera laughed a bit at this question. "I guess you do want to look around the town huh? We will be done after this last thing and then I will show you around town some. Then I will let you wander around by yourself at once you think you have the layout ok."

Sam nodded and looked around. She started with one of the corners, focusing, and slowly let the fire grow around them until it all came together in a square.

Pantera gave her a reassuring look. "Trust me, we won't get hurt. There is a reason I had you make the flames so far away from us."

She's so much like Petra.. Sam thought to herself. She nodded and put as much emotion that she dared to into the fire, watching the flames stretch up toward the sky.

"Very good. Now what this does is if you are facing an enemy and they flee, you can trap them and keep them from doing so. Ok, that is all I wish to teach you for today." Pantera said with a smile. "Now then, are you ready to see the town?"

The fire went out and Sam looked around. "Yep."
